From 1895 to Wi-Fi 6
📄 What We Did:
📍 Project Overview
A 10,000 sq ft landmark home built in 1895 on Shelter Island faced serious modern-day challenges — weak Wi-Fi coverage, self-installed Nest cameras, and an inoperable Crestron music system that once powered sound throughout the house. The IT room was overflowing with two 48U racks and shelves of obsolete analog gear, including a defunct phone system.
The property also had 12 outdated TVs, each with its own cable box — adding up to a staggering $900/month broadband and cable bill. Our mission: declutter, modernize, and unify.
🧰 What We Did
• Removed the entire legacy network, Wi-Fi, and camera infrastructure
• Decommissioned Crestron equipment and analog phone systems
• Rewired and rebuilt a clean, climate-controlled IT rack, retaining one of the original 48U racks — now neatly organized with only 20U of active equipment, all clearly labeled and efficiently laid out
• Installed 6 new Samsung Q8F & S90F QLED/OLED displays, all now running YouTube TV for regular programming. This replaced the outdated TVs and eliminated nearly $800 in monthly cable costs
• Removed all coax splitters — only the cable modem now remains connected via coax, eliminating a tangled mess of legacy wiring
• Installed and configured UniFi Dream Machine Pro, Switch Pro 48 PoE, Switch Flex, Switch Ultra 60W, and distributed PoE++ power throughout the property
• Deployed 12 UniFi U7 Pro, U7 Pro Wall, and U7 Pro Outdoor Access Points for Wi-Fi 6 reception inside and outside the house, ensuring total coverage across all living areas, patios, and guest spaces
• Installed UniFi G6 Instant and G6 PTZ Cameras with a UniFi NVR & 16 TB Enterprise Drive for 24/7 video security — including one camera overlooking Shelter Island Sound from a high vantage point. That perfect sunset can now be seen or streamed in 4K from any TV or web browser, wherever the homeowners are.
• Added a U-LTE Redundant WAN Module for broadband failover
• Rebuilt an 11-Zone Sonos system for synchronized, multi-room audio
• Optimized and reconnected all network-dependent smart devices and home-automation components
✅ Outcome
A seamless, high-performance network spanning the entire property — indoors and out.
Wi-Fi is fast and reliable in every room, cameras are secure and centrally managed, and music flows effortlessly through all 11 zones.
The once-chaotic IT room has been transformed: one of the original 48U racks now holds only 20U of active gear, perfectly organized, labeled, and climate-controlled.
All coax cabling clutter is gone — only the broadband modem remains connected.
Bills dropped, speeds soared, and reliability reached HarborHaus standards. ⚡️
✨ Result
A 120-year-old home reborn for the 21st century — smart, efficient, and fully connected.
