Whole-Home Technology Modernization for a North Haven Estate

📄 What We Did:

UniFi Network • Lutron RA2 Recovery • Nuvo/Sonos Audio • Ecobee Climate Control • Custom HACS Development • Home Assistant**

HarborHaus was brought in to modernize a substantial existing home technology environment. Rather than replacing valuable infrastructure simply because it was outdated, inaccessible or no longer properly supported, we focused on recovering what worked, modernizing what mattered and integrating everything into one cohesive platform.

UniFi Network Infrastructure

A new Ubiquiti UniFi network provides the foundation for the home's connected systems. The installation includes a UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE), USW-Pro-24-PoE switch, 2 × U7 Pro Max, 3 × U7 Pro Wall, 1 × U7 Pro Outdoor and a UniFi 5G Max Outdoor with cellular internet failover. A 24 TB enterprise hard drive provides storage for UniFi camera requirements.

Beyond providing high-performance wired and wireless connectivity, the network supports and allows HarborHaus to monitor the home's lighting, audio, climate, pool equipment, Home Assistant and other connected systems.

Recovering a Locked-Down Lutron RadioRA 2 System

The home's existing Lutron RadioRA 2 lighting system was operational, but access to its original programming environment had effectively been lost.

As a fully Lutron RadioRA 2 and RadioRA 3 certified company, HarborHaus was able to recover the existing installation rather than replace a substantial working lighting-control system. The recovered system includes 109 Lutron devices and is once again serviceable, programmable and expandable.

Integration with Home Assistant subsequently exposed more than 500 lighting and control entities for centralized control, monitoring and automation while retaining Lutron's dedicated lighting-control infrastructure.

Nuvo + Sonos Whole-Home Audio

The property also contained an extensive Nuvo Grand Concerto distributed-audio system. While the installed speakers, amplification and room infrastructure remained valuable, its original music sources had become obsolete.

HarborHaus recovered and reconfigured the Nuvo system, corrected room and zone assignments, removed outdated source equipment and introduced modern Sonos Port streaming sources.

Connecting Sonos to Nuvo would ordinarily leave the homeowner operating two separate systems. To eliminate that complexity, HarborHaus developed custom Home Assistant/HACS software that combines Sonos and Nuvo into a single whole-home audio experience.

Music selection, playback, room selection, grouping and individual room volume are presented through one unified interface. To the homeowner, Sonos and Nuvo appear and operate as one system while preserving the home's existing hardwired audio infrastructure.

Ecobee Climate Control & Local Integration

The home's aging Nest thermostats were replaced with state-of-the-art Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium units, eliminating reliance on the previous cloud-based integration and providing a more robust path into the home's automation platform.

The Ecobee thermostats are integrated with Home Assistant through local control, allowing climate functions to become part of the same centralized system used for lighting, audio, pool and other home systems.

Home Assistant also manages the home's climate schedules and timers. Instead of having schedules buried within individual thermostat applications, they are presented through easily accessible Home Assistant controls where the homeowner can view and adjust them from the same interface used for the rest of the property.

Home Assistant & Custom Development

Home Assistant serves as the property's central integration, automation and monitoring platform, bringing together the recovered Lutron system, Nuvo/Sonos audio, Ecobee climate control, Pentair ScreenLogic pool and spa equipment and other connected systems.

Where standard integrations were not sufficient, HarborHaus developed custom HACS applications and controls. Complex equipment is intentionally simplified for the homeowner - for example, pool and spa operation is presented through straightforward Pool Mode, Spa Mode and All Off controls rather than exposing the underlying equipment and valve logic.

HarborHaus also implemented system-health monitoring and automated notifications for critical equipment, helping distinguish network outages, service conditions and actual equipment or integration failures.

Preserve What Works. Modernize What Matters.

This project demonstrates the HarborHaus approach to technology in existing high-end homes: modernization does not necessarily mean replacement.

By recovering valuable Lutron and Nuvo infrastructure, combining Nuvo and Sonos through custom-developed software, replacing cloud-dependent climate controls with locally integrated Ecobee thermostats, deploying a modern UniFi network and bringing everything together through Home Assistant, HarborHaus transformed previously separate technologies into a cohesive, maintainable and modern smart-home platform while preserving significant existing infrastructure and investment.
